Transmission
Transmission:
The transmission in SlowGT is a
Jerico four-speed manual. Previous transmissions include a Liberty
Pro-Shifted T-5 and a Liberty Pro-Shifted Tremec TKO. With regular
maintenance (clearance and preload adjusting), the Pro-Shifted T-5
actually lived through approximately 300 passes in the 11.50 ET range
before chewing up 3rd gear. The TKO shifted great and was
functioning properly when it was replaced, Mike just wanted a little
extra insurance against failure. The Jerico transmission was
chosen because it appeared to be the strongest class-legal transmission
at the time and because it has an almost unlimited range of gear ratios
to select from.

Gear
Ratios: This transmission is available with almost any ratios
you could want. The gear ratios installed at this time are 3.08:1,
1.93:1, 1.34:1 and 1.0:1. The ratios were chosen based on a
previous combination that used 7,200 rpm shift points and a 4.56 rear
end ratio. At left is a graph showing the engine shift points as a
function of vehicle speed. To calculate your own gear preferences, check out the
gear related calculators on the Racers
Math 1 page. Using the current 5.13 rear end and
28" slicks at sea level, the 1-2 shift comes up in about 0.9
seconds from the launch and produces 60 foot times in the 1.4 second
range - enough to recede your hairline. With the 1999 combination SlowGT
goes through the traps at 127 mph and 8,000 rpm. For the upcoming
2000 combination, Mike may increase the first gear ratio to 2.95:1 to
delay the 1-2 shift. Although not installed in SlowGT,
the Jerico is available with synchros that are designed for clutch-less
shifting. The installed weight of the Jerico is approximately 70
lbs including fluid.

Shifter:
The shifter in SlowGT is a
V-Gate made by Long for Jerico. Pretty cool setup for
power-shifts. With the V-gate, you just pull the shifter straight back
from 1st gear to find 2nd, then
throw it straight ahead for 3rd and straight back again for 4th; no
worries about missing 3rd gear in the "cross bar" of the
"H" shift pattern. This arrangement is similar to the
V-gate shifters used in NHRA Pro Stock Truck. One draw-back to this
transmission/shifter combination is that the Jerico has external shift
rods. This requires that the shifter be mounted to the side of the
transmission which then requires that the transmission hole in the floor
pan tunnel be enlarged about 4 inches toward the driver. As can be
seen in the picture at left, Mike has fabricated a custom cover plate
for the shifter handle. Another draw-back is that the Jerico uses
a Lakewood 15202 bell housing (just like the Tremec) as opposed to a
Lakewood 15203 needed for the T-5.
