Exhaust

Header.jpg (13490 bytes)Headers and Crankcase Scavenging:  The exhaust system is a free-flowing race only design.  Street stock rules state that the exhaust must "use mufflers" and exit "within 6 inches of the rear axle".  The system starts with a set of Hooker 1.75" primary tube headers that incorporate a 3" collector.  Although a crank case evacuation system is incorporated into the collector on each side of the engine, no discernable benefit has been measured.  A crank-driven vacuum pump has since been incorporated to assist in crankcase scavenging.  This system produces approximately 18" of crankcase vacuum and again, no discernable performance increase has been measured.  It appears that engines with high levels of leak-down benefit most from a crank case evacuation pump.  SlowGT has less than 2% leak-down in all cylinders; very good numbers.  The headers were coated with a thermal coating by HPC both to reduce under-hood temperatures and to reduce corrosion.  The coating not only looks really nice, but it has been extremely durable.

HMuff.jpg (15420 bytes)Mufflers and H-Pipe:  The headers connect to a custom made "H-pipe" with crossover.  The "H-pipe" is made of 3 inch OD tubing and has as few bends as possible.  The "H-pipe" is connected to a pair of 3 inch Walker Bullet Race Magnum mufflers.  The exhaust note is considered (by some) to be remotely street-able.  For more information on building high performance engines, check out the books available at the SlowGT store.
