The fuel pressure gauge measures the fuel pressure at the fuel injectors. A constant fuel pressure is required to maintain a constant flow rate through the injectors. Fuel injectors are typically calibrated at a fuel pressure of 42 psi (approximately). See the fuel injector calculator.
