I have seen your problem before. The differential side shims that you describe should only be used to determine the proper shim thickness. After the thickness is determined, solid shims should be purchased from Ford to replace the “shim pack”. Another alternative is to buy an adjustable shim kit from Reider Racing. I have used Reider shim pack successfully many times. The Reider kit employs a center sleeve to prevent the shims from separating. The latter approach is probably easier since Ford dealers (usually) don’t keep the side shims in stock. Your gears should be OK.
