2001 Fireball Urist

Front2.jpg (16101 bytes)Hood2.jpg (25882 bytes)2001 Fireball Urist.  This page is dedicated to the current (2001) combination that Fireball Urist has up his sleeve and provides partial coverage of the Orlando Speed World NMRA event.  For starters, check out the new "arrest me red" 2001 Mustang body.  This is a factory-painted "body-in-white" car that John got through Coast High Performance.  Check out the pictures and videos below.

 Pictures

Elbow.jpg (24183 bytes)Engine1.jpg (25151 bytes)Engine2.jpg (28027 bytes)The engine.  Beneath the hood is a stout short block topped with a set of Victor heads and a Victor Junior intake courtesy of Edelbrock/Coast High Performance and both set up by Charles Rogers at Heads Up Performance.  The headers and exhaust are custom built by John "Fireball" himself.  The transmission is by Gary Gonzales and the engine is monitored and tuned using a Speed-Pro computer setup with wideband O2 sensor.  The engine was fine-tuned and dialed in on the dyno by Alan Dudley and Wayne Young of Youngs' Performance.  Notice the monster pipes feeding through the firewall, one to the intercooler and one from the intercooler.

Turbo.jpg (22768 bytes)Turbo2.jpg (24175 bytes)Turbo3.jpg (19685 bytes)The real motivator.  This is the real motivation behind the performance, cranking out 24 pounds of boost at full boil!!  Combined with the air-water intercooler located behind the firewall, this thing cooks.  Notice the default ram air location of the 91 mm turbo inlet... small children and animals beware!!

Susp1.jpg (24627 bytes)Susp2.jpg (21998 bytes)Rear suspension.  The rear suspension was set up by Duffy.  The rear end housing is entirely custom built by Duffy himself.  This is strong stuff.

Cells.jpg (24125 bytes)Computers.jpg (17527 bytes)Alternator.jpg (18692 bytes)Radiator.jpg (24536 bytes)Support equipment.  This car requires 2 cells; one for fuel, and one for intercooler water.  Computers everywhere, if only one of them would work!!  The alternator looks pretty bad, but at least it works!!!  The aluminum radiator is a work of art.

RacePrep2.jpg (26859 bytes)Burnout.jpg (25636 bytes)Cage2.jpg (24134 bytes)Cage3.jpg (24138 bytes)Qualifying turns out to be problematic.  On the first Saturday (March 3) qualifying pass of the weekend (actually, the second ever pass on the car) John ran a 10 second ET (boost was low at 7 pounds), hit the brakes and promptly veered toward the wall - missing by what is estimated to be only 6 inches.  It turns out that the exhaust system exiting the turbo was interfering with the driver-side tie rod under braking.  Luckily, chassis fabricator Duffy was on hand to make some major modifications to the exhaust system before the second round of qualifying.  Speaking of Duffy, he put together the full-on 25.1 spec chassis/cage setup that's legal for 7.50 and faster.  If you have to wreck someplace, inside this cage is the place to do it.  On the second qualifying pass, John runs through the 8th mile, and applies brakes to test for stability: all is well.  On the last qualifying pass of the day John turns up the boost regulator, launches soft (1.64 60 foot) and runs an easy 8.80 at 168 MPH.  Johns final qualifying position is number 10.  Number 1 qualifier was Chris Derrick with an 8.21 at 171 MPH.

Jerry.jpg (24892 bytes)JMeyer1.jpg (23549 bytes)JMeyer2.jpg (24242 bytes)Other attendees.  On an unrelated note, it appears that Jerry Glanville (former Atlanta Falcons coach) is in attendance and racing a car!!  The Doctor5.0 car belongs to Dr. Jamie Meyer.
